Before you choose a home security system
A useful comparison starts with the questions behind the headline price.
What does it cost? Who responds? What happens if I move or cancel? Ask each provider the same questions and keep the answers in writing.
Start with the home you have
List the entrances and areas you want to cover. If you rent, check what changes you can make. Think about who will arm the system, receive notifications, and manage access.
Ask for a complete price
Request a breakdown of equipment, installation, monitoring, and any other required fees. Check whether the advertised price is promotional and what you’ll pay afterward. “Free equipment” may come with a paid monitoring commitment.
Understand the response
Ask who receives an alert and what they do next. Find out which services are included in your plan, which need an upgrade, and how the provider handles interruptions to power or internet service.
Read the commitment
Check the contract length, cancellation charges, renewal terms, and moving policy. Ask who owns the equipment. Don’t rely on a verbal promise when the written terms say something different.
Make room for privacy
If cameras are involved, ask where recordings are stored, who can access them, and how to delete them. Consider whether you need indoor recording at all. Choose a setup you and the people in your home are comfortable using.
Give yourself time
Verify the company independently and compare written offers. You don’t have to make a decision during an unexpected visit or a high-pressure sales pitch.
