Smarter choices
Five questions worth asking before you buy.
A quick pause can help you choose what actually fits your life.
Write down what you need, what it will cost, and how you can change your mind. If those answers are fuzzy, give yourself more time.
1. What problem am I solving?
Finish this sentence: “I want this because it will help me ___.” Be specific. A gadget that looks impressive in a video may solve a problem you don’t actually have.
2. Will it fit my everyday routine?
Picture using it on an ordinary Tuesday. Think about setup, space, cleaning, charging, and who else needs to use it. For a service, consider how often you expect to use the features you’re paying for.
3. What will I pay in total?
Check the checkout price, delivery charges, required extras, and any recurring payments. A low starting price tells only part of the story. For subscriptions, note the renewal price as well as the introductory offer.
4. What happens if it isn’t right?
Read the return or cancellation terms before paying. Check deadlines, return-shipping costs, and whether an opened or installed item can be returned.
5. What would make me choose something else?
Name one alternative, including keeping what you already have. Then choose the feature that matters most to you. This makes it easier to compare on your own terms.
I need: ___
Total cost: ___
Most important feature: ___
Return or cancellation deadline: ___
